Please join me in welcoming Mihkel Nelson, our new science teacher at D. W. Daniel High School. Ms. Nelson graduated from Western Governor's University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education in Physics. She studied scientific inquiry-based learning directly through Pearson, where she obtained a certification in Principles of Learning and Teaching also known as edTPA. A resident of Oconee County since 2012, she loves being a mom, exploring new things, and enjoying nature – spending her free time hiking and camping across the upstate with her family. Ms. Nelson did her student teaching here at Daniel High School and genuinely grew to love and enjoy the beauty of Pickens County while there. She was born in Greenville, grew up in Tennessee, and lived in many different places, but South Carolina is her favorite. Ms. Nelson said, “I'm excited and honored to be a part of such an amazing community of educators and learners. I am very passionate about learning and meeting the needs of all learners. I take a humanistic and constructivist approach to learning. I enjoy teaching curiosity though inquiry-based activities in order to, not only teach the standards, but to help create a positive relationship between science and learning.” She looks forward to learning and growing as an educator at Daniel High School and cannot wait to get started. Welcome, Ms. Nelson!

She tells us, “I am most excited to re-connect with students I have already taught and also to get to teach some students that I missed out on when they were in 8th grade”. Welcome, Mrs. Cory!

Please join me in welcoming Lieutenant Colonel Curt Haase (Retired), our incoming Air Force JROTC Senior Instructor! Curt attended the United States Air Force Academy and began his operational Air Force career in 2004 at Charleston Air Force Base, SC as a C-17 pilot. Here he also met his wife and Clemson nursing grad Megan, thus sealing his connection to the upstate. He retired in 2022 after a 20-year career and returned to the area with Megan and their three children (5, 6, 11). After a two-year stint with Michelin, Lieutenant Colonel Haase is now thoroughly looking forward to working with the next generation of young leaders who aspire to serve their families, communities and nation. He is inspired by the mission of Daniel, the JROTC program, and the desire to give back to high school students in the same way his teachers and coaches did for him almost thirty years ago!

I enjoy gardening, thrifting, being outdoors, baking, attending church, quality time with my one-year-old, and playing card games with my family. I look forward to being at Daniel High School and being a part of the STEEP program. I cannot wait to enjoy the school spirit atmosphere and all the activities that Daniel offers, as well as to be able to see the students inclusively support each other regardless of their academic levels, status, or backgrounds.
